The retina is extremely important in its role of providing vision and as a result has many blood vessels providing it vital nutrients and oxygen. Over time and depending on other health related risk factors such as high blood pressure, these small veins may become occluded. Typically, this presents suddenly with painless vision loss in one eye. A dilated exam and photography will show bleeding and swelling of the central retina, the macula. Depending on the severity of the condition, the doctor may recommend treatment with either eye injections, retinal laser, or both to help preserve and in some cases improve vision.
